Movie Night: Barry Lyndon
The notes on the DVD case said that Kubrick drew inspiration from 18th century paintings for this movie, and I think I would have noticed that even if I hadn't read it. The movie was visually stunning, even on my dying TV with the white lines running across the top of the screen. The color was just vibrant.
I loved the first part, got pretty antsy at the 2 hour mark, and then got sucked in again at the end for the dual. Part of the problem for me was that, since the film is satirical and sort of overacted (deliberately) at times, I never lost awareness of the fact that I was sitting in my living room watching a movie. In a more serious drama I can be so drawn in that I temporarily forget it's not real, so I don't notice length, but that wasn't the case with this one.
All in all, I'm glad I saw it, but it's not on my favorites list.
(Unlike most people I know, I seem to not be a huge Stanley Kubrick fan. I loved Spartacus, but thought Barry Lyndon, and Dr. Strangelove were just OK. And, I know this is sort of sacrilege, but I loathed 2001: A Space Odyssey. Undeveloped characters I didn't care about, squeaky squeally noises that were so painful I had to put my fingers in my ears, and The Blue Danube Waltz seven or eight times. Bleh.)
